The Odyssey (Penguin Classics)By Homer

The epic tale of Odysseus’s journey home – one of the earliest and greatest works of Western literature

If the Iliad is the world's greatest war epic, the Odyssey is literature's grandest evocation of an everyman's journey through life. Odysseus' reliance on his wit and wiliness for survival in his encounters with divine and natural forces during his ten-year voyage home to Ithaca after the Trojan War is at once a timeless human story and an individual test of moral endurance.

E. V. Rieu’s translation has long been beloved and celebrated by scholars and readers alike, and for this Penguin Classics edition, classicist D. C. H. Rieu has revised the work of his father. This edition also includes an introduction by Peter V. Jones.

For more than seventy years, Penguin has been the leading publisher of classic literature in the English-speaking world. With more than 1,700 titles, Penguin Classics represents a global bookshelf of the best works throughout history and across genres and disciplines. Review
“[Robert Fitzgerald’s translation is] a masterpiece . . . An Odyssey worthy of the original.” –The Nation

“[Fitzgerald’s Odyssey and Iliad] open up once more the unique greatness of Homer’s art at the level above the formula; yet at the same time they do not neglect the brilliant texture of Homeric verse at the level of the line and the phrase.” –The Yale Review

“[In] Robert Fitzgerald’s translation . . . there is no anxious straining after mighty effects, but rather a constant readiness for what the occasion demands, a kind of Odyssean adequacy to the task in hand, and this line-by-line vigilance builds up into a completely credible imagined world.”
–from the Introduction by Seamus Heaney

About the Author
Homer was probably born around 725BC on the Coast of Asia Minor, now the coast of Turkey, but then really a part of Greece. Homer was the first Greek writer whose work survives.

He was one of a long line of bards, or poets, who worked in the oral tradition. Homer and other bards of the time could recite, or chant, long epic poems. Both works attributed to Homer – the Iliad and the Odyssey – are over ten thousand lines long in the original. Homer must have had an amazing memory but was helped by the formulaic poetry style of the time.

In the Iliad Homer sang of death and glory, of a few days in the struggle between the Greeks and the Trojans. Mortal men played out their fate under the gaze of the gods. The Odyssey is the original collection of tall traveller’s tales. Odysseus, on his way home from the Trojan War, encounters all kinds of marvels from one-eyed giants to witches and beautiful temptresses. His adventures are many and memorable before he gets back to Ithaca and his faithful wife Penelope.

We can never be certain that both these stories belonged to Homer. In fact ‘Homer’ may not be a real name but a kind of nickname meaning perhaps ‘the hostage’ or ‘the blind one’. Whatever the truth of their origin, the two stories, developed around three thousand years ago, may well still be read in three thousand years’ time.

E. V. Rieu was a celebrated translator from Latin and Greek, and editor of Penguin Classics from 1944-1964. His son, D. C. H. Rieu has revised his work.

D. C. H. Rieu is the son of E. V. Rieu, celebrated translator from Latin and Greek and Editor of Penguin Classics from 1944-1964.

‘”Strangers!” he cried. “And who are you? Where do you come from over the watery ways? Is yours a trading venture; or are you cruising the main on chance, like roving pirates, who risk their lives to ruin other people?”

‘Our hearts sank. The booming voice and the very sight of the monster filled us with panic. Still, I managed to find words to answer him. “We are Achaeans,” I said, “on our way back from Troy – driven astray by contrary winds across a vast expanse of sea – we’re making our way home but took the wrong way – the wrong route – as Zeus, I suppose, intended that we should. We are proud to say that we belong to the forces of Agamemnon, Atreus’ son, who by sacking the great city of Ilium and destroying all its armies has made himself the most famous man in the world today. We find ourselves here as suppliants at your knees, in the hope that you may give us hospitality, or even give us the kind of gifts that hosts customarily give their guests. Good sir, remember your duty to the gods; we are your suppliants, and Zeus is the champion of suppliants and guests. He is the god of guests: guests are sacred to him, and he goes alongside them.”

‘That is what I said, and he answered me promptly out of his pitiless heart: “Stranger, you must be a fool, or must have come from very far afield, to order me to fear or reverence the gods. We Cyclopes care nothing for Zeus with his aegis, nor for the rest of the blessed gods, since we are much stronger than they are. I would never spare you or your men for fear of incurring Zeus’ enmity, unless I felt like it. But tell me where you moored your good ship when you came. Was it somewhere along the coast, or nearby? I’d like to know.”

‘His words were designed to get the better of me, but he could not outwit someone with my knowledge of the world. I answered with plausible words: “As for my ship, it was wrecked by the Earthshaker Poseidon on the borders of your land. The wind had carried us on to a lee shore. He drove the ship up to a headland and hurled it on the rocks. But I and my friends here managed t o escape with our lives.”

‘T this the gruel brute made no reply. Instead, he jumped up, and reaching out towards my men, seized a couple and dashed their heads against the floor as though they had been puppies. Their brains ran out on the ground and soaked the earth. Limb by limb he tore them to pieces to make his meal, which he devoured like a mountain lion, leaving nothing, neither entrails nor flesh, marrow nor bones, while we, weeping, lifted up our hands to Zeus in horror at the ghastly sight. We felt completely helpless. When the Cyclopes had filled his great belly with this meal of human flesh, which he washed down with unwatered milk, he stretched himself out for sleep among his flocks inside his cave.

Enemy of the State sees Mitch Rapp unleashed like you’ve never seen him before. Kyle Mills has officially taken over this universe and has made it his own. In recent interviews, I’ve heard Kyle say that he more or less had to write a forgery of sorts when he took over with The Survivor. With three pages left behind by the late Vince Flynn, and very little to go off from The Last Man. Kyle delivered on that forgery, with many fans not knowing where Vince left off and where Kyle took over. With Order to Kill, I feel like Kyle did an even 50/50 with writing in Vince’s style and his own. He stayed true to all our favorite characters and even created a few of his own. One very good one at that. Now, with Enemy of the State, Kyle has taken ownership of this franchise and made it his own and is doing a fantastic job.Enemy of the State brings back some very special characters from the past, some good and some bad. When I say bad, I don’t mean they were a bad choice, I mean they’re BAD to the bone character wise.Other fan favorites are also back, Scott Coleman is still recovering but is eager to return to the field and Mike Nash is being built up as a potential player on a whole different level. Dr. Irene Kennedy is of course as impressive as always in her craft and her son Tommy is mentioned quite a bit as always. In Order to Kill, Kyle hints at a potential relationship for Mitch which I am happy to see moving forward and being a very good thing for Mitch. In fact, Enemy of the State ends on a very good note which finally has Mitch having everything he’s been missing in life. The seismic like activities created in these pages are sure to get you thinking as deep as Mitch is, regarding his past, present and future. As I mentioned, and then completely went in another direction, in this book we see Mitch Rapp unleashed like never before. In this MUST-READ thriller, he goes rogue and is left to deal with certain situations how best he sees fit. For example, his mission planning is interrupted by a local thug and he deals with him in a quick and permanent as well as bad ass move.Kyle throws in so many fun easter eggs that are sure to pop out at you if you’re a longtime fan of the series. Along with those, the action, dialogue and story line are sure to capture you from the very first page. Enemy of the State starts off with Mitch fulfilling a promise he made in Order to Kill. While doing so, a longtime favorite character is also mentioned, as Rapp mentions his training so long ago from the pages of American Assassin. To conclude my rambling, Enemy of the State is definitely 5 stars worthy and another winner for Kyle Mills.

I have read the entire series of Mitch Rapp books of Vince Flynn and the last few written by Kyle Mills. Each author wastes not a single word and carries plot and action forward like a bullet. Kyle Mills has added a slight bit of humor and inner life's musings to the Rapp character which I enjoyed. Having been an 'operative' (of nowhere near the caliber of Mitch) but having functioned in that realm for a short period I appreciate the authenticity of the operators characters who assist Mitch in his missions. If you enjoy being gripped by excellent writing, story telling and intriguing characters (and a good fire fight) these books belong in your collection.Lee Burkins Author of 'Soldier's Heart: An Inspirational Memoir and Inquiry of War'

This book falls way short of the other novels. Every inch of Vince Flynn has been squeezed out and this story was good but extremely flawed. Why would mitch bring together a group of enemies when he could easily recruit from other friendly sources? Why recruit people he swore to kill if he ever saw them again? Why save a man he wanted to kill in a previous book? These flaws show me that this series is over. It reminds me of the Bourne series and the covert one series after Ludlum died. They went from great to mediocre.

If you are like me, you like to read the 1 star reviews. Note they are 4% and the 5 stars are 71%. I stand with the majority. I have read every MR book and I still enjoy the hell out of them. Kyle Mills is doing a great job of carrying the torch for Vince Flynn. The only thing that sucks about this series is you get one book a year and I read them in a week or less. The other 51 weeks I'm thinking about how I can't wait for the next one!

From Robert Ludlum to Tom Clancy to Vince Flynn, whenever a popular author with on-going characters passes away, those of us who are fans grieve for the loss of the author but also fear for the loss of our heroes. As a GIGANTIC Vince Flynn fan I think it is up to me to be grateful that a talented writer like Kyle Mills has accepted the passing of the literary baton from a Legend and to be fair in my expectations regarding future books. Whining that "it isn't Vince" is useless. The question is not "is it Vince?", the question is "is it good?" In my never to be humble opinion, Kyle Mills is doing an excellent job of keeping Mitch Rapp alive and kicking butt and this book did not disappoint me.

Here is my review from Enemy of the State based on the advanced readers copy I received from Atria and Emily Bestler Books! A huge thank you to them for having selecting me for an advance copy three years running! Glad to be a Mitch Rapp Ambassador and hope to see more people come enjoy this great series! In this fast paced Mitch Rapp thriller you're going to experience a little bit of confusion. It's a good thing, don't worry! Mitch is now in a place in his life where things are changing. But don't doubt that he's the one true American asset that knows how to take care of business when it needs to be DONE!Kyle does a phenomenal job in taking everyone's known Flynn Rapp and making him his own, and it fits right in with everything we've ever known and believed! What would you think if the best team in the world just split up? What if the Golden State Warriors were like, we are tired of playing basketball! It would be an extremely odd play. This was a faced paced top-notch read that I I had to force myself to read slowly and enjoy! It fits right into daily news you see on the news and the Enemy is actually relevant in real life just like in the book! Current times make this so much more believable and keep you turning pages faster then you expect too! Please don't miss this one and preorder a copy or two today! I already have my copy of the hardcover and audiobook ordered! Hope this helps you all out! Have a good one!
