About the Author
R. Stephen Berry is a James Franck Distinguished Service Professor Emeritus and member of the Department of Chemistry faculty at the University of Chicago. He received his BA and PhD from Harvard University. He is a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, a Foreign Member of the Royal Danish Academy of Sciences, and has received among various other accolades the Alfred P. Sloan Fellow (1962-66). Professor Berry's research explores the topics of structures, properties and dynamics of clusters and biopolymers, dynamics of few-body systems, and finite-time thermodynamics.

Joshua Jortner is a Professor Emeritus at the School of Chemistry at Tel Aviv University. He received his Master of Science in Physical Chemistry and his PhD from the Hebrew University in 1960. He is a Fellow of the American Physical Society and a member of the American Chemical Society, and has received a myriad of awards and honorary degrees. His research includes the exploration of the phenomena of energy acquisition, storage and disposal in isolated molecules, clusters, condensed phases and biophysical systems.

The crimes described include some very recent ones?the bombings of Pan Am Flight 103 and the Oklahoma City Federal Building and the hunt for the Unabomber?but the O. J. Simpson case is not covered. Generally, the author's writing style is quite effective, with colorful language and logical structure. Jenny Tesar's Scientific Crime Investigation (Watts, 1991; o.p.) covers much of the same material (though examples are not as current) in slightly less effective language but has illustrations and a glossary. Donna Jackson's The Bone Detectives (Little, Brown, 1996) treats one aspect of forensic science with full-color photographs and has an even more appealing writing style. And several books, including Robert Gardner's Crime Lab 101 (Walker, 1992), Robert Sheely's Police Lab (Silver Moon, 1993), and Jim Wiese's Detective Science (Wiley, 1996), address the subject in less detail but include experiments so that readers can try out detection techniques. Silverstein discusses the wealth of new technology that criminologists have at their disposal, beginning with a trace of forensic history and profiles of some of the practitioners who manipulate the clues. The bulk of the book examines how the evidence--whether blood spatters, shell casings, carpet fibers, or DNA--is recovered and analyzed. Case studies, some quite gruesome, are a large part of the text, but Silverstein has taken care not to sensationalize. She gets a little off track in her chapter on bombs, spending less time on the way technology was used to unravel the cases of the Unabomber and the Oklahoma City tragedy than on the circumstances surrounding the crimes (at one point she states the Unabomber "was" Theodore Kaczynski, only later noting he has yet to go to trial), but that's more than balanced by the wealth of intriguing information, straightforwardly delivered. I am not rating this because of the book it self but because of the seller. It took forever to receive it and I couldn't track it. Also the seller said the book was just like new. When we received it, it was stained on almost every page, the pages were torn and dirty and so was the cover. It was disgusting! My daughter needed this book for school and she was embarrassed to even carry it to school! It was awful!

This book does not mess around. If you truly want to understand why human beings see things the way they do in the world of design (including areas like universal signage, graphic arts, and infographics), and are willing to put in the time to read the science presented in this book, you will be rewarded with a level of understanding that probably fewer than 5% of all marketers and graphic designers possess. This is not a fluff book; it's as much academic as it is instructional in terms of design concepts (things to do, things to avoid, etc). It will require concentration and a quiet place to absorb what's being taught. If you want a book on how to make frilly Illustrator Symbols, this is not that book -- there are dozens of others for that purpose.This book teaches you the most important thing about design and symbology; it explains *why* certain types of designs resonate with most people, and why others don't... basically giving you a window into the human brain and the eye-brain perception system. If you really want to learn something and not just how and when to press a few buttons, this is a book that does not have any peers as far as I can tell. Note: I'm not a scientist or someone who works in academia so that is not a requirement to understand the book, but as I said it does require concentration.

I read the 2nd ed. of this book, years and years ago. I remember that it was a life-changing experience. Having worked in information graphics and visualization in newspapers and magazines, Ware's thoughts made a lot of things suddenly make sense. If you work in this area and wish to have a more scientifically-grounded approach to it, this is a good place to start.

Its a good book but its very pricey I like Colin Ware's stuff but you can get the same information from a variety of cheaper books. I recommend HBR's Guide to Charts Good Charts: The HBR Guide to Making Smarter, More Persuasive Data Visualizations.However, if you are some studying the psychology of visual perception, this might be a good choice for you.

I've used the previous versions of this textbook to teach my course on Visualization in the Sciences for years. The new edition adds a set of succinct Guidelines that will be very useful to the students in recalling the material and in expressing why they chose particular designs.

Great book, takes the notion of visual perception to a next level.I'm a master degree in Computer Science student, working with information visualization and this book is very helpful.The book arrives here in Brazil very fast, about five days, much less than if I buy the book here, and more cheaper.

I didn't care for this book. Found it a slow difficult read. Boring
